Drammens Uldvarefabrik

Drammens Uldvarefabrik

Sometimes, you are out with our horse and sleigh, riding through a snow covered landscape when three magical hazelnuts fall into your lap. At least it happened that way in Tři oříšky pro Popelku (Three wishes for Cinderella).
The equivalent magic occasion happened for me when I chanced upon bolts of deadstock fabric from the old Norwegian textile mill “Drammens Uldvarefabrik”. The fabric is about 70% wool and 30% terylene, a polyester (polyethylene terephthalate) -fiber formerly frequently added to wool for it’s highly durable and crease-resistant properties. These fabrics have been in storage for more than 50 years, and I was lucky enough to be able to buy 161 meters, divided at several different bolts. They were stored in pristine condition and ozone-treated, so they are really beautiful fabrics I hope I get to make into many useful and pretty things.
Making the fabric treasure even better: these were actually produced with electricity from the nearby river: the factory produced electricity for itself and also neighboring houses.
Hydro powered locally produced fabric made to last – take out the polyester and it kinda sounds like a “sustainable textile” -dream, does it not?
